BHDDH director reappointment up for Senate hearing

 

STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee meets tomorrow for a hearing on the reappointment of Richard Charest as the director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.

The meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the rise of the Senate session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House.

The U.S. and Canada are expanding an agreement to reroute asylum seekers who cross their borders illegally. President Biden made the announcement during an address to the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. The deal will allow Canada to turn away migrants from unofficial crossing points, including a popular crossing between Quebec and New York.        Former President Trump has posted a picture of himself holding a baseball bat next to a photo of the Manhattan DA's head. This, as Trump warned there could be violence if he ends up being indicted by a grand jury in New York City. Democrat DA Alvin Bragg is weighing whether to ask a grand jury to indict Trump in connection with an alleged payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about an affair.        The State Department is experiencing an "unprecedented demand" for passports. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the department is getting half-a-million applications each week for passports. That's 30- to 40-percent above the application rate from last year.        A new report says a top former Trump White House official will have to testify about the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. ABC News reports former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was among those ordered to testify by a federal judge. A grand jury is probing the events that led up to the riot which turned deadly.        Twelve migrants were found in a train car near Uvalde, Texas on Friday, including two that are dead. Officials say the migrants were discovered by Border Patrol agents in the afternoon. The surviving migrants were treated by first responders, with some needing to be airlifted to hospitals in San Antonio.        An NBA superstar is the newest member of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition. Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors has been appointed alongside his wife Ayesha. The White House says the council "aims to promote healthy, accessible eating and physical activity for all Americans, regardless of background or ability.
